Android platform versions - August 2014

Every month, Google releases an updated report of its Android platform distribution, depicting the current distribution or market share of Android versions that are active in the wild. As of August 2013, Android versions older than 2.2 Froyo has dipped below 1%, and in the following month, the data is no longer measured. This is because Google is now measuring the numbers based on the new Play Store app, the version that older Androids can’t run.

The current reading is gauged during a seven-day period that ended on August 12th, 2014. Back in July, Android 4.4 KitKat’s ‘market share’ was at 17.9% and this time around is has grown to 20.9% which is a natural progression.

The Jelly Bean collective has also dropped 2.3%, from 56.5% in July to 54.2%, but we can’t help but notice that Android 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3 JellyBean is the new 2.3 Gingerbread. It may take a few more months if not years until the number finally dips below 20%, like it did with Gingerbread back in March.

Other numbers continue to fluctuate unpredictably, albeit just slightly — 2.2 Froyo stays at 0.7%, 2.3 Gingerbread actually grew 0.1% to 13.6%, while 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich dropped 0.8% from 11.4% last month, to 10.6% now.

If you’re interested in more statistics, you can find out about the distribution in screen sizes and densities, as well as the percentages of Open GL versions, over at the Android Developers’ Dashboard page here: http://developer.android.com/about/dashboards/index.html.
