Google officially announced its next version of Android, version 5.0, and we now know that its official codename is ‘Lollipop’. We have covered some of its features in an earlier piece which you can check out, but here we’re going to talk a bit about when can some of the Android devices get this sweet, sweet update.

Shortly after Google unveiled the Nexus 6, Nexus 9, and the Nexus Player, a bunch of manufacturers have promised to upgrade their devices to the latest operating system. The near-final preview images of Android 5.0 has been released on October 17th for the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 WiFi, but naturally, Google would like Lollipop to debut first on the Nexus 6 and 9, which will start shipping around November 3rd. Lollipop is expected to be rolled out on the Nexus 4, 5, 7, 10, and (all?) Google Play edition (GPe) devices in the “coming weeks” following that.

You can expect devices designed by Google to get Android 5.0 the earliest. Android One handsets that was recently launched in India will likely to get Lollipop too.

The still-Google-owned Motorola will also be getting the Lollipop treatment, on all of its Moto and (Moto X 1st & 2nd gen.; Moto G 4G, 1st, & 2nd gen.; Moto E) Droid (Ultra, Maxx, Mini) devices, however it is not giving any specific timeframe.

HTC has previously pledged to deliver Android L Release when is it out, within 90 days of receiving the final build from Google. If the company’s able to deliver the promise, we’ll be expecting an up-to-date Desire EYE, M8, M7, and possibly other flagships like Butterfly 2, E8, et cetera, to get Android 5.0 by the end of January.

Sony is on the same boat as HTC, confirming that Android L will drop on the entire “premium” Xperia Z series, which include: Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact, and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. Ironically, the aging Xperia Z Ultra GPe will get it first; another reason to get Google Play edition / Nexus devices?

LG is not commenting yet if and when it is going to roll out the latest build to its flagships like the LG G3, or even the G2 for that matter. Neither is Samsung, though there were leaks of Android L with TouchWiz seen running on the Galaxy S5.

Google’s own devices have an 18-month support window to continue receiving updates; even devices as old as the Nexus 4 and 1st generation Moto X gets Android 5.0 Lollipop. The rest, however, will fall under the mercy of the device manufacturers.
