After only a 4-month wait, the successor to the original Redmi Note will be arriving in Malaysia. The Redmi Note 4G, with LTE Cat 4, will be on sale in December and device has already made its way on to the Malaysian Xiaomi site.

The Note 4G is actually its predecessor’s twin on the outside but Xiaomi has revamped a few things to get the former ready for its competitors. The biggest change on the new Note is of course the introduction of a Cat 4 LTE connection. Xiaomi has also swapped out the MediaTek processor and, as with most other mid-tier LTE devices, has replaced it with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chip. The device comes with Android 4.4 out of the box and has maintained the MIUI V5 user interface. The device now comes with a single SIM slot instead of the dual-SIM configuration of the previous version. One other difference which has caught our attention is the display itself. The 4G version has applied the Full Lamination Technology for its implementation of the OGS (One Glass Solution). This would make the IPS LCD display on the inside seem closer to the outer glass but Xiaomi has not mentioned what type of material (if any) they’re using to protect it against scratches. We’re hoping its at least Corning’s Gorilla Glass 2, as with the previous version, or Concore glass because of the OGS.

Apart from the differences mentioned above, the Redmi Note 4G looks exactly the same on the outside. The spec sheet does mention that the new device is 10 g lighter but the negligible difference will not be enough to tell the two apart.

Here is the comparison chart of the specifications for both devices:

The Redmi Note 4G is priced at RM 589 which is still a great price considering you’re getting a decent 5.5” device with an LTE connection (the older Note was priced at RM 509). The device is slated to be launched in early December but no definitive date has been announced.

To lead up to the official sale, Xiaomi has organised a series of contests for Malaysians to get their hands on the device or at least on the F-codes (to skip the queue when the device is available here). Head on over to the Redmi Note 4G Pop Quiz page to join the contest and for more details. You can also read the terms and conditions from the Mi Malaysia Facebook page.

Let’s just hope that the device will start shipping in time for the Christmas holidays for those who are looking/expecting to upgrade.
