TCT Mobile Malaysia unveiled last Tuesday its ALCATEL ONETOUCH FLASH smartphone, which is claimed to be one of the world’s best selfie smartphone. This is another mid-tier phone by the company and, as with the others in its stable, the FLASH is pretty decent in both the looks and the performance department.

The ONETOUCH FLASH’s claim to fame is its selfie capability. The phone has a 5 MP fixed focus front camera with features such as Face Beauty (part of Smart Beauty Enhancements) to add dramatic effects, Expression feature that captures four shots in a single snap, and face tracking to capture selfie with the 13 MP rear camera. There’s even a digital image stabiliser that helps to keep the image shake and motion-blur free.

This dual-sim phone is powered by a 1.4 GHz true octa-core chip that is capable of firing up all 8 processing cores at the same time. The hardware on the FLASH, comprising of 1 GB RAM, 8 GB internal memory, a 5.5” HD display, and a removable 3,200 mAh battery, does make it a very capable mid-tier device. The phone even comes with dual-band wifi for speedy transfers, when connected to a hotspot, and HSPA+ when on the go. Unfortunately, LTE is missing here but can be overlooked considering the other positive points that is on board.

Here are the specifications for the FLASH:

  • 1.4 GHz octa-core (8 x ARM Cortex-A7 processors) MediaTek MT6592M CPU and ARM Mali-450 MP4 GPU.
  • Runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat with ONETOUCH UI.
  • 5.5”, 1280 x 720 (HD 720), IPS LCD screen with MiraVision colour enhancer and a pixel density of 267.02 ppi. Has full lamination technology (OGS) touch screen panel.
  • 1 GB RAM, 8 GB internal memory and accepts microSD card of up to 32 GB.
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n dual-band with Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi Display, Bluetooth 4.0, Hotknot (NFC-like communications protocol), and micro-USB 2.0.
  • Supports GPRS, EDGE, and HSPA+. Two micro-SIM (dual-standby) slots.
  • 13 MP auto-focusing rear camera with LED flash, and 5 MP fixed-focus front camera.
  • Additional features include FM Radio with RDS, supports high quality audio formats (FLAC, Vorbis, AAC+, and APE), digital image stabilisation, Face Beauty, Face detection, Expression, Smart Wake gesture commands, and flip to mute.
  • Comes with a 3,200 mAh, removable, Li-ion battery.
  • Has a dimension of 152.1 x 76.2 x 8.1 mm and weighs 150 g.

The FLASH also comes with Hotknot communications technology (which is somewhat like NFC) that allows users with smartphones that have a similar protocol to send or receive files. As with NFC, this protocol will probably be used to initiate the pairing and then handover the actual transfer to either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi Direct.
