While the Nexus family always gets the latest Android update after Google rolls it out, the reality is that many smartphones including numerous 2014 flagships out there are still on Android 4.4 KitKat. Samsung Galaxy S5 (SM-G900F) happens to be one of the first smartphones that ships with KitKat, to have received Android 5.0 Lollipop (LRX21T). The company first rolled out the update last month to Poland, and we could now get the same update here in Malaysia, but only through the Kies3 desktop software for now.
This is actually quite unprecedented considering that the Nexuses only got this build for less than three months ago, and many manufacturers promised a 90-day period from the day they got the image from Google, to the day the update is ready to be pushed to devices.
Unlike the update for Poland, in Malaysia we’re looking at versions NL3 for PDA, NL3 for CSC, and NL1 (XME) for PHONE. Galaxy S5’s previous build before this was PDA:NI4 / CSC:NI1 / PHONE:NG8 (XME).
Right before updating, you’ll be presented with the changelog in the desktop application. Besides all the improvements and features of Lollipop, the new TouchWiz will also make notifications more visible and accessible.
Unfortunately for now, this is where the good stuff ends. Samsung said that at least 3GB of free space is required before the update could even run. Even so, after successfully upgrading the S5 to Lollipop, the new available space of the device will be decreased to a minimum of just 950MB.
But perhaps the most damning is from Google’s OS itself. Even on Nexus devices, Android 5.0 is just sluggish and suffered suffered constant lockups, and it is no different here on the Galaxy S5. Android 5.0.1 and 5.0.2 have alleviated some of the major complaints but the one that’s available for the S5 is the very first 5.0 release. This is probably why it isn’t available as an over-the-air update yet. Install at your own risk.
