SNS Network, in collaboration with Intel, has introduced its latest devices under its JOI brand for the Malaysian consumers last week. The JOI 7 Lite tablet and the JOI Phone 5 smartphone are powered by the all new Atom x3 processor: which happens to be Intel’s first integrated communications platform for entry level devices.

The devices are the first to introduce the 64-bit dual-core Atom x3-C3130 (formerly codenamed SoFIA) SoC. The lowest in the series, the x3-C3130 chip can have speeds of up to 1 GHz, comes with a 3G connection (the highest in the series has an LTE chip), and interestingly enough, Intel has incorporated the Mali-400 MP2 chip from ARM to handle the graphics. This is really not a bad option as the graphics chip is the same one that can be found on other low-tier devices, and it also helps to keep the overall cost down.

Looking at the individual devices themselves, the JOI 7 Lite tablet presents an unbelievable value for all that it has to offer. For starters, it has a 7”, 1024 x 600 (WSVGA), IPS LCD screen with a passable pixel density of around 170 ppi. Users will be surprised to find out that the tablet comes with two cameras; there’s a 2 MP camera at the back and a VGA one at the front. What really takes the cake though is the inclusion of GPS and the support for 3G connections. The 2,600 mAh non-removable battery might be a setback but it all depends on how efficient the new chip performs, and how much juice the display will require.

As for the phone, one can be forgiven for mistaking the JOI Phone 5 for one of the older ZenFones at first look. Phone 5 comes with a 5”, IPS LCD, HD display (1280 x 720) and fares slightly better than the tablet with its 293.7 ppi pixel density. The 8 MP shooter at the back comes with its own flash, and another 2 MP at the front to handle all the selfies. GPS and support for 3G are here as well (it’s a phone after all), along with a 2,100 mAh removable battery.

Other shared specifications include two mini-SIM slots with dual-standby, 1 GB of DDR3 RAM, 8 GB internal storage, microSD slot that supports up to 32 GB, display that supports multi-touch, micro-USB 2.0 port, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, and Bluetooth 4.0. The devices come with Android 4.4 KitKat but SNS Network confirms that these will upgraded to 5.0.2 Lollipop later.

The JOI 7 Lite tablet has an extremely competitive price of RM 299, while the JOI Phone 5 is priced slightly higher at RM 399. The devices are said to available at major AEON stores and via reseller networks nationwide. They’re also expected to be available online at GLOO (wholly owned e-store by SNS Network), Lazada, and Lelong, but a quick check on those sites brought up just the tablet on the first two sites, and nothing on the last one.
