Motorola has just announced the international version of the DROID Turbo and it is already available online in Brazil. The Motorola Moto Maxx is one of those you’d call a beast-of-a-device and it pays homage to the RAZR MAXX family of devices. Just like the other members of its clan, the device comes with a hefty battery and an incredible battery life.
The Moto Maxx is Motorola’s answer to requests for a multi-day traversing, ruggedly constructed, border crossing device. It comes with a 5.2” Quad HD Super AMOLED display that delivers a retina-busting 564 ppi, and it happens to top the Note 4 by nearly 50 ppi. Motorola has also (somewhat) brought back its Mobile Computing System chipset which made its first appearance as X8 on the first generation Moto X. The chipset has been beefed up with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, that includes the very latest Adreno 420 GPU, as well as the Natural Language processor and Contextual Computing processor configuration. The last two processors, respectively, are responsible for the always on voice command and the gesture controls, among others.
Here are the specifications of the device:
- Motorola Mobile Computing System: 2.7 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 (APQ8084) CPU, Adreno 420 GPU, Natural Language processor and Contextual Computing processor.
- Runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat with stock Android launcher.
- 5.2”, 2560 x 1440 WQHD (Quad HD), Super AMOLED screen with a pixel density of 564.85 ppi. Has Gorilla Glass 3 panel.
- 3 GB RAM, 64 GB internal memory but no microSD card slot.
- Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct, NFC, DLNA, Bluetooth 4.0, IR blaster and micro-USB 2.0.
Has GPRS, EDGE, HSPA+ and 4G LTE (Cat 4). - 21 MP, auto-focusing rear camera with two LED flash and 2 MP front camera. Aperture for the rear camera is rated at f/2.0. 4K video capable.
- 3,900 mAh, non-removable, Li-Po battery. Built in Qi-wireless charging and comes with a Turbo Charger.
- Dimensions are 143.5 x 73.3 x 11.2 mm and weighs 176 g.
- Comes in only Black Ballistic Nylon colour option.
Moto Maxx comes with a premium ballistic nylon back and a layer of Kevlar under that. Motorola claims that this is a first for the industry and the materials have been chosen for their durability and quality. The front display is protected by a Gorilla Glass 3 coating, and a water-repellent nano-coating protects both the inside and the out from moisture. The Maxx is not exactly waterproof but should be able to handle light rain and moisture.
The camera is another first that I’ve seen in a Motorola device. The Moto Maxx comes with a 21 MP camera that’s also capable of recording 4K videos. The device has two LEDs for flash which are placed on either sides of the camera and these are said to provide balanced lighting on the subject. The camera can also be activated with a twist and back of the wrist, much like the Moto X. More importantly for the selfie crowd, the 2 MP front camera can also capture images with a voice command.
As with current Motorola devices, the Maxx supports Qi-wireless charging technology and comes with a rapid charger. The 3900 mAh battery is said to be able to run for about 40 hours of normal usage and that’s without turning on the energy saving mode. Once depleted, it only takes 15 minutes on the Turbo Charger to get an additional 6-8 hours of use.
Click to view slideshow. The Moto Maxx is priced in Brazil at R$ 2.199,00 (~RM 2868.56) and is only available there for now. The published price is simply exorbitant when converted to Malaysian Ringit but Motorola devices are normally sold way above the market price in Brazil. We should be able to expect a different pricing when it becomes available elsewhere and the actual price should be a lot closer to the DROID Turbo’s off-contract price of US$ 599.99 (~RM 2,008).
Motorola Moto Maxx only comes in 64 GB version and has only one colour option. It also comes with a guarantee of upgrade to Android Lollipop when that becomes available. The availability of the Maxx will expand to Mexico in mid-November and other Latin American countries soon. Availability in all other countries and regions has not been confirmed yet.
