The Android Wear platform that was launched barely 8 months ago has already seen second generation devices and multiple updates but all that would be nothing if the devices themselves end up as just watches. People also want more from their smart watches, as displaying time and pushing notifications from their smart device are already old news.
After the launch, Google set out to get more developers to start making apps for the watches. What started off with just a handful of apps, rose up to about 50 apps just 2 month ago and now, the Android Wear Apps section in Play Store has 163. These include popular messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Messenger by Facebook, Telegram, KaoKaoTalk, and Hangouts, as well as apps for health & fitness like Endomondo, Runtastic Running and RunKeeper. Google+, Pinterest and Tinder have also joined the fray to provide support for their respective social networks and there are also a number of apps for travelers to dig their teeth into. Users can also ID songs with the TrackID app by Sony or even make life changing decisions with the help of RollDice or Coin Flip apps.
The bottom line is, the developers have started taking note of the huge potential the Android Wear has; now that more watches have begun to appear.
Google has also announced that the Wear platform now offers offline music playback as well as GPS support (so that you won’t need your smartphone anymore to get GPS data) that can track both distance and speed. However, the only device that currently has built-in GPS is the upcoming Sony SmartWatch 3.
There will also be another update soon which will allow for downloadable watch faces, à la Pebble, for the Android Wear platform. With the update, users be able to configure their watches to display only the data that they would want to see. These watch faces will also be available on Google Play in the near future.
