Huawei introduced its brand new Mate 7 (Ascend Mate7 for international market) at a media event yesterday and had announced that the phone is available today.

“The arrival of the Mate 7 a little after a month of its international launch is yet another indication of our commitment to Malaysia,” said Gary Xu, Country Director, Consumer Business Group, Huawei Technologies Malaysia. “As work and play both converge on to handheld devices, Mate 7 is well-timed as an excellent companion on many fronts, be it a large screen size, fingerprint security, a powerful processor with eight cores and excellent battery life to keep the experience going from work to play and beyond.”

The Mate 7 is Huawei’s first device to feature a single-touch fingerprint sensor that is supposed to increase the login speed to at least 80% more than the conventional swipe-to-unlock methods. The square shaped reader, measuring 9.16 x 9.16 mm, that is located at the back will detect wet prints or even under light rain. The device supports up to 5 sets of different fingerprints and will be able to allow the either the owner or other guests to login. The enhanced features of its SecureOS ensures private folders, applications, and payment information are completely protected. Stored fingerprints are encrypted by the ARM TrustZone system that’s been built into the chipset, and this prevents direct access by third-party apps or individuals.

The Mate 7 has a 6” display and comes with the very latest HiSilicon Kirin 925 octa-core processor that’s built upon ARM’s big.LITTLE platform. The technology mates four high-speed 1.8 GHz ARM Cortex-A15 processors with another four low-speed 1.3 GHz ARM Cortex-A15 processors. The CPU is expected to save up to 50% of battery life by automatically switching between the two processors, based on usage and power requirements of the app that’s running. The CPU will activate additional cores when any of the running cores are detected to be performing at 85% or more, of their capacity.

At the event, Huawei also presented the mid-tier G7 (Ascend G7 for international markets). The phone is a 5.5” affair and is capable of 4G LTE Cat 4 connectivity. The G7 comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 which should also make this the first 64-bit device from Huawei. The full power of this device should be realised when it receives Android 5.x Lollipop but as we all know, that would be entirely up to the manufacturer.

Here are the specifications for both devices:

Both devices run Android 4.4.2 KitKat along with the brand new EMUI 3.0 user interface. Huawei claims that the UI makes it easier for users to operate the devices with one hand and features a brand new look across the entire software interface. With the EMUI 3.0, Huawei has introduced a new design theme called Timeline and this is used extensively throughout. Apart from maintaining a consistent look and feel across all system apps, Timeline combines key features such as call, contact, and messaging and presents them in a practical and visually appealing manner.

For those who have been following Huawei’s line of smartphones would have noticed that the ‘Ascend’ moniker has been dropped from both these devices. We’re not sure if this is just a minor oversight but these were the names that Huawei had printed in its pamphlets and presentation. A quick check on its Malaysian site still shows the devices with their original names intact so we’re still not sure of the direction of this move, but we’ll keep you guys posted.

The Huawei Mate 7 Standard version is available from today at Huawei authorised dealers nationwide with a price tag of RM 1,799. The Standard version comes with 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB ROM and comes in Moonlight Silver or Obsidian Black colour options. The Mate 7 will come with a free smart cover worth RM 128, while stocks last. Huawei is also offering a one-to-one exchange for any manufacturer defects, for one year from date of purchase.

The Premium version on the hand will arrive at a later date that Huawei has yet to confirm. This version comes only in Amber Gold and has 3 GB of RAM along with 32 GB of ROM.

If you’re looking instead for the mid-tier Huawei G7, it has been confirmed that it will be available in Malaysia by end of December. It will come with an SRP of RM 999 and you can get yours in either Black or White.
