Meizu is another Chinese company that has been consistently making a splash with its smartphones and has built up quite a following. This is an achievement considering that the company only has a single product line for its smartphones and the MX4 is actually its 5th device to date.

The MX4 is a benchmark busting device with a good build, lovely aesthetics and a love-at-first-sight price. Meizu has opted for an octa-core MediaTek processor here but the device proved its capability by grabbing the top spot at AnTuTu’s Best Performance Smartphone in Q3 of 2014. The 2 GB RAM and the PowerVR 6200 graphics should have helped somewhat with the testing.

The 5.36” display from Sharp and JDI has a new LED backlight module that has brought up the colour gamut along with the contrast ratio, and delivers a brightness of 500 nits. The device supports 5 network types across 13 different frequency bands and comes with a Cat 4 LTE connection. The MX4 also comes with a 3,100 mAh battery that is said to deliver up to 21% more energy savings compared to other batteries with similar capacity.

Another part of the device that grabs the headlines is its 20.7 MP rear camera with Sony’s IMX220 Exmor RS sensor. In case you’re wondering, that’s the same sensor that is used in Sony’s Xperia Z1, Z1 Compact, Z2, Z3 and Z3 Compact. It should be interesting to see real world results when the camera is put to test.

Here are the other specifications:

  • 2.2 GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6595 CPU and PowerVR 6200 GPU.
  • Runs Flyme 4.0 (based on Android 4.4.2 KitKat)
  • 5.36”, 1920 x 1152, IPS LCD screen with a pixel density of 417.74 ppi. Sharp/JDI OGS, LED-backlit display with Gorilla Glass 3.

  • Supports GPRS, EDGE, HSPA+ and 4G LTE Cat 4.
  • 20.7 MP auto-focusing rear camera with Sony IMX220 Exmor RS CMOS BSI sensor at 1/2.3″ size, dual-tone dual-LED flash, 5-elements lens with Blue IR filter and Gorilla Glass 3 lens protection. 2 MP front camera with Sony IMX208 Exmor R CMOS BSI sensor, Sharp 4P lens with blue glass filter. Meizu’s Malaysian distributor, Blue Kor Sdn. Bhd., recently organised a pre-order campaign for the MX4 together with Lazada and Lelong but the campaign is already closed now. Lazada had posted on its pre-order page that the devices are expected to arrive in Malaysia this Friday. Those who actually managed to book one are expected to receive their devices within 4-6 days after the arrival. Blue Kor mentioned on its Meizu Malaysia Facebook page that there were around 2000 units for the pre-order and they’ve all been taken.

Blue Kor has already set up a service centre in Shah Alam, probably at its office, and is in the midst of setting up another one in PJ. The company has plans to open centres in all states within Malaysia but will most probably concentrate on getting one in KL next. Only devices that have been brought in ‘officially’, which has the SIRIM approval, will be accepted for repairs by the service centres. For the time being, customers from other locations will be able to use a courier service to send in their devices for any issues that may arise.

According to Blue Kor, new stocks of the Meizu MX4 will be arriving on December 5 and it looks like they will either start selling them immediately or open up pre-orders on that date. For the moment, only the 16 GB version will be up for grabs with the 32 GB version coming by the end of December. The 16 GB MX4 is priced at RM 1,099 and the 32 GB version will be priced at RM 1,299 but we’re not sure what are the colours that will be arriving here in Malaysia.
