Lenovo Malaysia launched the interesting VIBE X2 at a launch event earlier today. The smartphone was announced in September of this year and it only took less than 3 months to get here.

With the VIBE X2, Lenovo broke the manufacturing mold (so to speak) with this new way of building a smartphone. The X2 is the world’s first phone to have a layered design whereby 3 layers of different-coloured magnesium alloy slabs make up the body and the display making up the 4th. Each of the metals layers have 3 coats of paint to give it a smoother finish and the selection of the 3 colours themselves took a lot of work. Different samples of hues were printed and matched to get to the kind of look that Lenovo had wanted for the X2.

On another first, the X2 is probably the pioneer device to be powered by MediaTek’s latest True Octa-core processor (that’s been built on the big.LITTLE configuration). The chip gives the X2 a boost in performance, battery life and data speeds as well, with its LTE Cat 4 connectivity.

Here is our list of the VIBE X2’s specifications:

  • Octa-core MediaTek MT6595M (2.0 Ghz quad-core ARM Cortex A-17 + 1.5 GHz quad-core ARM Cortex A7) CPU and PowerVR 6200 GPU.
  • Runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat with VIBE UI 2.0
  • 5”, 1920 x 1080 (HD 1080), IPS LCD screen with a pixel density of 440.58 ppi.
  • 2 GB RAM, 32 GB internal memory but has no microSD card slot.
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac dual-band, Bluetooth 4.1, and micro-USB 2.0 with OTG.
  • Supports GPRS, EDGE, HSPA+ and 4G LTE Cat 4. Dual micro-SIM/nano-SIM (dual standby) slots.
  • 13 MP auto-focusing rear camera with CMOS BSI sensor, 5-elements lens and LED flash. 5 MP front camera. Aperture for the rear camera is rated at f/2.2.
  • Additional features include Instant-on camera, Instant-on Feature, Air gestures, Active noise cancellation, and FM Radio.
  • 2,300 mAh, non-removable, Li-Po battery.
  • Has a dimension of 140.2 x 68.6 x 7.3 mm and weighs 120 g.

With the choice of colours, styling, and features, the X2 is clearly earmarked for the younger generation. To make it even more attractive to these group, Lenovo has also added another unique touch with the optional VIBE Xtension click-on cases.

The first of which is the VIBE X2 Battery that adds an additional 75% uptime with its 2,300 mAh battery. The case is only 5.1 mm thick and its micro-USB port will allow for simultaneous charging of both the battery within the case as well as the one inside the phone.

The second one is called VIBE X2 Speaker and as its name would suggest, comes with an external speaker. Lenovo has roped in JBL to help give the VIBE X2 a hi-fi sound system and the case can provide up to 5 hours of usage without connecting the phone to a power source. The case is 8.3 mm thick, delivers sound in 2 channels, connects via Bluetooth, and allows for the X2 to stand upright for a hands-free use. There’s even a built-in mic to make the X2 work like a tele-conference device.

All of the upgrades make the X2 a major improvement over its predecessor. Lenovo Malaysia has also confirmed that the variant available here has dual SIM slots. We’re surprised that Lenovo Malaysia has brought this in much faster than the original VIBE X. It is important to note that the forerunner took slightly longer to launch here and was only announced in Malaysia earlier this year.

The Lenovo VIBE X2 has a retail price of RM 1,199 and is available in Red, White, Charcoal, and Gold colour options. The device can be purchased now at all Lenovo authorised outlets.

The VIBE Xtension cases will be available later with a retail price of RM 139 for the VIBE X2 Battery and RM 299 for the VIBE X2 Speaker.
