There’s a new smartphone player in town that has been making the news recently with its ultra slim phones, great cameras and hi-definition audio. The name vivo (yes, the brand name is written in lower-case letters) might ring a bell for many but most would not have known that its parent company, BBK Electronics Corporation, also happens to own the popular OPPO Electronics Corp.

Vivo’s latest device to make an appearance here is the X5Max smartphone. Its alloy chassis and stainless steel body/back brings the thickness of the device down to a mere 5.08 mm. This is slightly thicker than the original version for the Chinese market, which stands at an incredible 4.75 mm, but vivo Malaysia has confirmed that the extra for this Southeast Asian version is due to a larger battery (2,300 mAh as opposed to 2,000).

The X5Max is touted as an Hi-Fi grade audio device that vivo hopes will find a place in an audiophile’s collection. On that front, vivo has gone the extra mile to source and incorporate some high-quality chips to support its Hi-Fi 2.0 standard. The X5Max has an ESS ES9018K2M Sabre Stereo 32-bit audio DAC, two ESS SABRES9601K SABRE Headphone Drivers, two TI OPA1612 ultra-low noise precision audio operational amplifiers, a Yamaha YSS-205X digital surround signal processing chip, and to top things off, a deluxe DC/DC converter with LDO. The X5Max really has got what it takes to deliver a superior audio performance but we’ll just have to take a listen to find out if that Hi-Fi 2.0 is any good. It’s a good thing though that vivo has somehow managed to squeeze in a standard 3.5 mm audio socket in the body to help potential customers to try the phone out with their regular head/ear phones.

On to the smartphone side, the X5Max is a pretty decent affair but the 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 may not seem like a match for phone’s asking price (which equals and surpasses some flagship devices that are shipping with an Snapdragon 8XX chip). Then again, its price could be associated to the device’s audio prowess. Otherwise, the device comes with a 5.5” Super AMOLED (HD 1080) display, optional dual-card slots (one for micro-SIM and the other can be used for either a nano-SIM or a microSD card), a 13 MP rear camera with a Sony sourced sensor and a 6-element lens assembly. The device runs vivo’s own Funtouch OS 2.0 that is based on Android 4.4.4 KitKat.

Here are the key specifications for the device:

  • Octa-core (4 x 1.7 GHz ARM Cortex-A53 processors + 4 x 1.0 GHz ARM Cortex-A53 processors) Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 (MSM8939) CPU and Adreno 405 GPU.
