The much awaited MIUI 6 has finally landed in Malaysia for the Mi 3 and Redmi Note 4G smartphones. The latest OTA updates for Mi 3 (MIUI 6.3.9.0 – KXDMIBL) and Note 4G (MIUI 6.3.5.0 – KHIMIBL) were pushed on Sunday evening and the first confirmations started coming in from India. The new naming convention of these ROMs looks like it could be the regional update that will be pushed to a few countries; instead of the previous practice of having one ROM for each country.

The update not only brings fixes and patches to the underlying Android OS 4.4.4 for both Mi 3 and Note 4G, but users can also get to experience Xiaomi’s brand new MIUI 6 that first appeared on the developer versions.

Although some users, who have updated to the new ROM, complained seeing problems, as well as lag after the update, both the devices that I updated seem to worked fine. The new UI is smooth and it’s beautiful. My only complaint is that the fonts on the Mi 3 look a lot smaller and seems out of place on its screen (though the same font size looks good on the Note 4G). The issue was easily remedied with a change to the settings (Settings > Additional settings > Font > Medium) but I’m surprised that the default font size is smaller than what it was previously.

Other changes include a brand new pull down menu for Notifications and (scrollable) Quick settings, new Settings menu, new icons, and new ways to personalise your phone. Users can also launch the camera directly from the lock screen using a left swipe. The changes to MIUI’s own apps, settings and menus are innumerable and would have to be experienced in person to understand that the MIUI team has indeed put in a tremendous amount of work in the latest iteration.

To get your own OTA update, go to Settings > About phone > Check for updates. The file size of the updates comes to more than 500 MB on both devices so its advisable to get them while connected to Wi-Fi. If you’re planning to download the update file for Mi 3 from MIUI’s repository, you’d be disappointed to know that for now, its only showing older files for all locations except China. Note 4G users however are a lucky bunch as the latest file is now live on the device’s MIUI download site.

If you’re a Redmi 1S or Note user, you’ve got updates too. Though its not MIUI 6 and there are no upgrades to the Android version, the new update does fix some common issues found on the previous versions.
