After weeks of hints that Android 5.1 Lollipop will be arriving, and after a month or so it has already appeared on Android One devices, Google finally officiates the arrival of Android Lollipop, version 5.1. On top of all the new features that we’ll cover here, 5.1 also delivers stability improvements and performance enhancements. This hopefully will address some complaints by Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 owners where there are noticeable bugs and lag issues (like Home screen redraws), even for a new device (partially contributed by the default device encryption).

For starters, Android 5.1 now supports HD Voice calling (VoLTE) on compatible devices such as the Nexus 6, as long as the carriers support it too. This new Lollipop build also, for the first time ever, supports multiple SIM cards natively. While there are already a ton of Android phones supporting dual SIMs, who would’ve thought that this feature is not built-in on Android, but instead relies on workarounds done by OEMs.
Perhaps the most important addition on Android 5.1, is an extension feature called Device Protection. An extension to Android Device Manager, which lets you remotely locate, lock, and erase your Android, Device Protection secures your device at an even deeper level. Even after a factory reset, an Android 5.1 Lollipop device will remain locked until you (the previous owner) sign in with your Google account. Because of the hardware-level feature, this will only work with devices shipped with Android 5.1, in addition to the new Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 devices.
And finally, the Quick Settings pull-down tray now allows you to directly join WiFi networks without having to go into Settings. You can also manage (pair/unpair) Bluetooth devices from the toggle area.

As with any Android releases, only the Nexus and Android One devices will receive the update almost immediately, and it’ll take many months before other devices ship with it. Even 5.0 that was out for four months now, only managed to cover 3.3% of all active Android devices that has Google Play Store, based on March’s Android platform distribution chart.
