The Xperia E-series may have started off as the lowest offering in Sony’s mid-tier range but it looks like it’s going even lower. The latest addition to the series, the Xperia E4 Dual, now comes with a much lower price point while maintaining most of the specifications of its predecessor; the older Xperia E3 was launched in Malaysia last October.
The Xperia E4 Dual may not be the best device in its price range but, on top of the Sony brand it carries, the device does come with a decent amount of specifications and features. The younger E4 is powered by a quad-core MediaTek MT6582 CPU this time around as opposed to the Snapdragon 400 on the E3. The RAM has been retained at 1 GB but with an 8 GB internal memory, junior gets double the storage of the E3. The E4 also gets a bump in many of the sections including the secondary camera (2 MP vs. VGA), display (5” scratch-resistant display vs. 4.5” shatter-proof glass, with higher resolution and an insignificantly higher pixel density), and Bluetooth (4.1 vs. 4.0).

- 1.3 GHz quad-core (4 x ARM Cortex-A7 processors) MediaTek MT6582 CPU and ARM Mali-T400 MP2 GPU.
- Runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Xperia UI.
- 5”, 960 x 540 (qHD), IPS LCD display with a pixel density of 220.29 ppi, and comes with a scratch-resistant glass.
- 1 GB RAM, 8 GB internal memory, and accepts microSD card of up to 32 GB.
- Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n with Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.1 with apt-X, DLNA, and micro-USB 2.0.
- Supports GPRS, EDGE, and HSPA+. Two SIM slots (micro-SIM) with dual standby.
- 5 MP auto-focusing rear camera with CMOS BSI sensor, LED flash, and a 2 MP front camera.
- Additional features include FM Radio with RDS, PartyShare, xLOUD, ClearAudio+ (Clear Stereo, Clear Bass, Clear Phase), auto scene recognition with up to 52 scenarios, Portrait retouch, Live on YouTube, Timeshift burst, AR effect, Social live, Creative effect, Sweep panorama, and Sound photo.
- 2,300 mAh, non-removable, Li-ion battery which supposedly has a 2-day battery and even up to a week in Ultra STAMINA mode.
- Dimensions are 137 x 74.6 x 10.5 mm, and weighs 144 g.
The E4 also has some nice design elements that are normally associated with Sony’s more expensive range. From the distinctive OmniBalance design, to the the shiny power button, and right down to the stainless steel ring around the rear camera, have all been adopted to give this device a premium feel that the price does not offer.
On the other hand, what Sony has removed internally can be significant for some. Compared to the E3, junior now has no NFC, drops dual-band Wi-Fi, has no ANT+ support, but most important of all, comes without LTE. It’s clear that the Sony Xperia E4 is going after the lower end smartphone market that is primarily controlled by a few Chinese manufacturers, but dropping some of of those features may not be great idea since many users now are looking for more bang for their buck.
The Sony Xperia E4 comes in Black or White colour options and Sony Malaysia has confirmed that other matching cover accessories will be available soon too. The device has an RRP of RM 459 and is available now at all authorised retailers.
